Category Image For those about to rock...

... We salute you!

So funny story : I was fishing through some of my stuff the other day looking for bits to tack onto my Space Marines or something. I don't really remember. Regardless, I opened up my sprue-folio drawer on my craft chest, and found a box with an entire Destroyer Lord kit in it, sans 2 or 3 pieces. I had used these pieces to make my Lightning Lord (specifically the torso and two of the 4 arms from the kit). What remained in the box was 2 arms - one holding a Staff of Light, and another in a dynamically clinched pose - and an entire Destroyer sprue. So, in the spirit of "waste-not-want-not," I pulled these pieces out and started cutting and gluing!

rockerlord.jpgWhat resulted was a new destroyer (4 out of 5 - Mom and Dad provided the vital 5th one for the full unit), and a new Necron Lord! I used a body, legs, and head from a spare Warrior, and the two arms I had found in the pewter pieces of the Destroyer Lord kit. This made a good basis for the Lord, but it looked bland. It needed something far more. I bounced around ideas in my head, and after tossing out flowing robes and a banner for being too ordinary, I decided to put something on him no other Necron I have ever seen has : wings!

I thought back to a sculpture I had seen in someone's yard in Ferndale : a metal ribcage with giant wings spread behind it. The wings had no webbing or feathers, it was only the spines. This seemed appropriate to the Necron Lord, as there is no flight power for Necrons (at least ones not on a Destoyer body). So, the wings would be purely cosmetic. Going through my stuff, I used some pieces of thin plastic strip from a kit of random plastic sheets and bars that I got a while ago. I clipped it into 2 sets of 4 diminishing sized spars. Now, I needed something curved to make them come out of the back of the Lord with, so I cliipped out 2 90º sections of a 25mm base, and carved out only the edge. Trimming it up and drilling 4 holes into it, I had 2 sets of wings at the ready! A few snips and a drop or two of glue later, my Necron Lord had wings!

The only down-side, of course, was that he now looked like the cover art for a Winger album. :(

The next day, I came back to the project again, and started off on making the base for this epic looking rocker! I had a few more modifications I wanted to make to him, but I couldn't do that until I could see how he was going to be standing. I had an idea in mind for his base, but it would mean rearranging his legs a bit, and I didn't want to put a loin cloth on him when I was going to be rearranging leg positions.

I started off with a 40mm base, and a cake pillar. I took a hack saw to the cake pillar at an odd angle to give it a toppled pile of rubble look. I used a sheet of plastic to cover the top and give it an even service for the Necron Lord to stand on. A little rubble, and a few scarabs later, and the base was done. I also added a Scarab holding his Resurrection Orb for him.

The next step was to get the Necron Lord standing on such an odd angle. I had to do quite a bit of clipping of his legs, and pinning and gluing. Once I had him standing where I wanted, I made a small Green Stuff loin cloth and attached a chain across as a belt / sash thing. Some slight bending and rearranging, and BAM!! Rocker Necron Lord!

I can't wait to get to painting this guy.
